The prestige is another one of my personal favourtie movies...
The Prestige is about two rival magicians at the turn of the century, and their tale of how their rivalries ultimately destory each other, over an illusion that both of them strive to perfect.
The tale starts off almost at the end actually, where it is the trial of Alfred Borden (Christian Bale), who is accused of killing Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), also known as "The Great Danton". The movie then flashes back to when the two characters first interacted, as apprentices for a magician, until one night Angier's wife is killed in a horrilble accident that Borden is accused to be responsible for.
From that point on the two became enemies, the movie then continues to flash back and forth between three time periods; the present, the beginning, and just before Angier's death. From this point on the story is told to you bit by bit, all from different time periods slowly explaining, and unravelling the lives and secrets of these two men.
The Prestige has a very intricate and difficult timeline, and plot... so if you don't pay attention you can get lost very quickly, thus making the movie a little difficult to enjoy for those who are easily distracted. On the other hand if you can grasp the plot, it sucks you right in and you hold onto every minute of it until the movie ends, and then like the cover says "You want to see it again the second it's over." Plus all of the "A" list actors not only in leading (I secretly have a thing for Christian Bale!), but supporting roles as well; Michall Caine who plays "Cutter" an ingeneur, and Scarlett Johansson who plays Olivia a woman torn between Angier and Borden, and many more...
Over all if you enjoy a good intellectual movie that keeps you guessing, I would definitely suggest this film, but again if you get easily distracted this movie isn't neccesarily for you. Worth a shot though either way.
